NMPA, NSAI Respond To Rate Appeal

A strongly worded statement issued today by the National Music Publishers Association and the Nashville Songwriters Association International assails Amazon and Spotify for declaring "war on the songwriting community." The two services have appealed last year's Copyright Royalty Board rate increase decision (CAT 1/29/18), prompting NMPA's David Israelite to call the move "shameful" and the companies "big tech bullies." He adds, "The CRB's final determination gave songwriters only their second meaningful rate increase in 110 years." Adds NSAI's Bart Herbison, "You cannot feed a family when you earn hundreds of dollars for millions of streams." Read the full statement here. Requests for comment from Amazon and Spotify had not been answered at press time.
