Chronicle: Phil Everly

Condolences are extended to family and friends of Phil Everly, the younger half of the Everly Brothers, who passed away Friday (1/3) from COPD. He was 74. With his brother Don, the Everly Brothers started out singing with their parents at a very young age, and were invited to Nashville by Chet Atkins, where they signed with Columbia in 1955. They had their first No. 1 with "Wake Up Little Susie" in 1957. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. "I always thought I'd be the one to go first," Don Everly told the Associated Press. "I was listening to one of my favorite songs that Phil wrote and had an extreme emotional moment just before I got the news of his passing. I took that as a special spiritual message from Phil saying good-bye."
